Do RCI Points transfer with resale?
Ask the Timeshare Crusader / May, 2011
We own three RCI points timeshares, which we purchased on the secondary market. At a recent "owner presentation" at one of them, our sales rep reviewed our properties and told us that two of them would eventually be "caught" by RCI and reverted to weeks. He said that points do not transfer to non-relatives through a resale, and that RCI would contact us and expect us to pay a sizable fee to continue on the points system. Is this true?
This question makes me angry and sad. Angry and sad that this timeshare salesperson is allowed to say such things apparently without fear of retribution.
The fact of the matter is, what you were told was out-and-out false. RCI is not going to "catch" anything, as there is nothing other than a less-than-honest salesperson to catch. While it is true that some timeshares purchased on the secondary market (Disney Vacation Club and Marriott Vacation Club to mention two) do not carry the full "bundle of rights" they would if purchased from the developer, RCI Points do not fall into this category. To double check, I went directly to RCI and was reassured that this salesperson is either woefully misinformed, or lying.
I would love to know the name of the resort and the name of the salesperson in question as I'm convinced that the only way to stop this from happening in the future to other timeshare owners is to publish the names. For too long, these statements have been allowed to be repeated and the individuals and individual resorts have remained in the dark. It is time that the curtain was pulled back!
Rest assure that your instincts were correct, you have NOTHING to fear and should continue to use your timeshares and your RCI Points as you have in the past.
