Status of Construction
thank you Michelle,
i tryed to just ask a question and it turned into a personal problem with someone..... i my field vacations are like gold... and i wanted to hear from others so i would have a little time to planned other thing while i was there. i have been going to maui for 30 years , and alot has changed on the island and to the resorts, and there are times that just chilling at a pool for 7 days is just what someone needs.. have a great time when you get there...... jeff southern ca.

No problem Jeff, I had the same curiosity about how things were going also(hence the reason I came here). We will be at the MOC the beginning of June for 2 weeks so I was searching to see if anyone who's been recently can tell us how it's all looking. I can't wait to see the new towers and pools as well, last time we were there was in '07 and they were just starting. I hope you have a nice vacation as well, Maui is so awesome!
Michelle W.
Thanks Kathy the info. I was keeping my fingers crossed it would be closer to the beginning since we leave the day it's supposed to open(what a bummer in timing). A while back I spoke with someone in customer relations and she had told me that the 20th was the worst case scenero, they were really going for the 6th but they must have hit a snag and it will actually be done on the 20th. Oh well, we will still have fun, it was just soooo close :-) Michelle

Just an UPDATE on constuction at maui.just returned from vacation, from 5-23-09 to5-29-09 the Pool is almost done.there was water in the pool to keep the plaster from cracking, but on fri they were getting ready to drain it again , and refill and start salt treatments they may open early but looks like the 15th will be a sure thing, it will be Very nice when its done.... They are also painting the intire outside of the resort except for the new towers, looks like that is on schedule also, The pools are a little crowned at times but its like on shifts the way the pools open up, but if you want to sit by them all day , get there EARLY 6AM and stake out your chairs, the 45 min rule has been enforced to the most part.......... Still all in all aGREAT trip the staff as always is great !!!!!!, The prices on food and drinks are much higher this year, So buying the refill mugs are the best deal this year if you plan on drinking coffeee and soft drinks all week...... Hope this helps the rest of you out there .It will be nice to finally go there with no construction going on its been over 5 years , maybe next time :) HAVE A GREAT TIME
Jeff W.
Hi. with three towers now it didnt look that busy, but at night the resturants are full and busy, when the main pool opens it will help with the crowding at the pools, and yes a mia tie mug would be nice.but if you didnt already know when you order a drink at the marriott bars, if you ask for a double it only cost 2.00 extra bucks, and happy hour at the pools are from 11-12noon and 4-5pm so pace yourself and drink hardly at happy hours !!!!!!!!! it was nice this time because the basketball playoffs came on at 3pm evryday there was a game at happy hour:)...... have fun !!!!!

Thanks Jeff for keeping us up to date! We leave Wed and are using points in Wailea then we head to The Maui Ocean Club for 2 weeks. This is the first time we are splitting up our unit to stay longer, one week just wasn't long enough! :-) We can't wait! Great info about Happy Hour, will keep that in mind. Glad you had a good time.

Thanks Jeff
The pool bar pours a pretty good one tho' I hate plastic cups ! Main gripe with them is that they close so early and there really isn't anywhere else onsite.
Did the new restaurant replacing the departed (hooray) Rusty Harpoon ever open ?
Have a great trip Michelle, we're about 130+/- days behind you but who's counting :)

I agree with you there Paul , the pool bars do close way to early, and as for the rusty harpoon , it is reopening as something else maybe about the time you arrive, but the rusty harpoon has been moved to a new location, not quite sure where but we have a good friend that works at the hula grille, and she said it was close by where it was ,just in a better location
have a great one

Old Rusty location is to be redone and emerge as one of the "DK" restaurants but could be its timetable has been put back.
"Cane & Taro is currently set to open in Kaanapali, Maui, in June, in the space Rusty Harpoon vacated for its move. " So there should be activity around the old Harpoon is this is on schedule.

Just got back:( The super pool opened early on Wednesday all looks great, they are finishing the leaf design and painting on the older towers it will all blend in nicely with the newer towers to look like one big resort, nice job! With the super pool being reopened there where plenty of lounge chairs any time of day, no need to rush and grab. They are enforcing the 45 minute rule we did see them move some books and towels off, which is nice to see. Some small changes around the pool and lounge- grass area, added some sand, it looks very finished. I think most will be very happy with it. Aloha!

Does anyone know if there is other construction going on at the property? Marriott's website mentioned some painting. I know the pool is completed, but I want to know if the other construction is complete as well. My family and I will be going in mid July. Thanks!

As of June 28, the old Rusty Harpoon is still covered with plastic wrap. The 'new' Rusty Harpoon is up on the corner, on the right by the golf course as you turn left onto Kaanapali Parkway. The latest reviews on Trip Advisor don't give it any higher marks than it was getting before it closed in Whalers Village - poor service, mediocre food.... Cane & Taro is open in the old RH site - mixed reviews on Trip Advisor on it.
