I am looking to rent out my 2-bedroom unit this summer. Are there ant additional charges that apply when renting a unit ?

Best regards, Jukka Tiainen

Hi Jukka,

If you post your rental on RedWeek.com there will be a membership fee and a fee to post your rental.

Your resort may charge a transfer fee for allowing someone else to use your unit, or transferring your deed to another person's name. Each resort has a different policy, so please make sure you are aware of the rules and charges that may apply to you.

Thanks, Marty

I have a related question... as a potential renter from an owner, what do I need in the way of a reservation confirmation or other documentation to ensure that I will really have the room available upon arrival?

Prior to the money exchange I have made a habit out of checking with the property to confirm that there is a reservation in the owner's name. Once you have exchanged the money (and sometimes owner's will require a rental agreement to pass on any liabilities), the owner can add your name to the reservation. There will be a confirmation that can be emailed to you. The resort may still charge a daily tax to your bill.

I have both rented from other people and rented my own timeshare to other people.

My best advice is that when you consider renting from someone else you do the following: 1. Establish exact dates of the existing reservation. 2. Establish the exact view category (islandview, oceanview, oceanfront) that the person owns. 3. Establish what specific location in the resort they have requested. 4. Get the exact reservation number from the person you are renting from and check to make sure that it does exist, and confirm check-in dates and view category. Once you have established these things, then you really know what your buying. ***Don't rely on someone who tries to rent you an "islandview" unit that says "I always request and get an oceanview"... Maui Ocean Club will most likely NOT honor that request. Lastly get a rental agreement that lists you as the "renter" with the exact reservation number on it.

When I rent the units I usually just "add" the renters name to the reservation. I don't take my (owners name) off the reservation because there are certain things that are provided to owners that are not provided to renters... for example free parking.

The advice is spot on!!! I just add the renter onto my reservation and when I notify the Marriott of the new guests they get emailed a confirmation.
