Moosehead Cottage Resort

My wife and I spent a wonderful, relaxing week at Moosehead Cottage Resort in late September 2002. We went looking for peace and quiet and a chance to explore northern Maine. We found everything we were looking for, and more. The cabin is spacious, well- furnished, and very comfortable, with all the creature comforts you could want. We especially liked the semi-open floor plan (see floor plans on the resort's web site) with the upstairs loft, the exposed beams, and the fireplace. There are sliding glass doors opening on to a back deck with a view of the nearby woods and distant mountains and the club house down the hill has a heated pool, sauna, and exercise room. The days were warm and the nights cool and there were no bugs or noisy children.

There is plenty to do in the nearby area. Greenville is an old, small resort community at the southern end of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in Maine. There are a few shops and restaurants and more to see and do in the nearby towns. We went for a day trip on the paddle wheeler that takes people up to the northern end of the lake. There are lots of smaller lakes, rivers and streams nearby for boating, fishing, and white-water rafting. There are also plenty of mountain trails for hiking: we tried out a section of the Appalachian Trail. The area is full of moose. Mt. Katahdin and Baxter State Park are about 50 miles away. You can drive for miles on back roads through totally un-inhabited country. We loved it!

Don't underestimate this one! If you are looking for a cozy, quaint log cabin retreat, close to nature and away from the hustle and bustle, this is the right place. We stayed here in August 2002, while new cottages were under construction. The staff is very friendly, and there is an indoor pool and playground for the kids on site. Very close by is the magnificent Moosehead Lake, with bathing, canoeing, hiking, biking, and plenty more activities.
